WHAT IS SQL AND WHY IT IS GOOD TO BE SKILLED ON SQL

What is SQL?

SQL stands for Structured Query Language. It is used in Database Management System (DBMS) such as Oracle, to fetch the desired outcome based on certain scenario or condition. A simple example would be filtering only a specific item like headphone on a commercial website say Amazon or Flipkart. When you do such a search, your search criteria is transformed into an apt SQL query on the list of all the products available or sold on the website.

SQL or Structured Query Language, pronounced as SEQUEL, is a language that provides an interface to relational database systems. IBM in the early 1970s developed SEQUEL which stands for Structured English Query Language for their RDBMS. The acronym was later changed to SQL, as SEQUEL was already trademarked by some UK-based aircraft company. In common usage SQL also encompasses DML (Data Manipulation Language), for INSERTs, UPDATEs, DELETEs, and DDL (Data Definition Language), used for creating and modifying tables and other database structures.

How SQL works are it understands fields that are in tables, and how to find the data in the tables based on the contents of the fields.  All SQL operations are then one of four general things you do to tables:

  • CreatePutting data into tables.
  • ReadQuery data out of a table.
  • UpdateChange data already in a table.
  • DeleteRemove data from the table.

This has been given the acronym “CRUD” and is considered a fundamental set of features every data storage system must have.  In fact, if you can’t do one of these four in some way then there better be a very good reason.

Why Getting Skilled Up in SQL Is Good For You

Hospitals, hotels, banks, retailers, airlines, app development companies, governments and just about any organization need to organize all the information that are relevant to run their daily operations. And who do you think will help run the databases that contain all these information?

It’s no wonder SQL skills count among the most desired IT skills for years in a row. But even if a database-related profession doesn’t strike a chord in your ensemble of career preferences, knowing at least one computer language is steadily becoming mandatory in today’s job market. SQL will give you a good background on how to generate useful information from a database, which is a cool skill to have in the business intelligence department.

SQL is almost universally understood by database administrators. For a while, SQL seemed to be losing relevance with the rise of NoSQL services such as MongoDB and Redis, with non-SQL using Big Data computing platforms such as Hadoop, Spark, and Cassandra. Many people were howling about how SQL was dying.

Apparently not anymore. As a result, even NoSQL had to reposition itself as Not Only SQL.

With the rise of big data and the difficulty of managing it, SQL is hotter than ever (as you already know from the job trends). Google has also recently updated its BigQuery service so it can now ingest up to 100,000 rows per second per table, and BigQuery uses SQL. Spark also has the Spark SQL Module since version 1.3.

All in all, SQL is relevant again because it’s needed to manage (not store) big data. Thus, not only is SQL everywhere, but it’s safe to say SQL will continue to be relevant for a while now.
